Course Overview

The healthcare sector in England employs more than 1.3 million professionals across diverse roles and settings. This qualification provides a strong foundation for entering the healthcare profession and offers clear progression routes into specialist study and career pathways.

The HND in Health and Social Care Practice develops a thorough understanding of the health and social care environment in England through a blend of academic learning and 450 hours of structured work placement. This practical experience enables students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings and gain the essential skills required for a successful career in the sector.

The programme equips learners with transferable skills relevant to a wide range of healthcare roles and supports progression to undergraduate study in areas such as health and social care, public health, and related disciplines. For those already employed in the sector, it offers an opportunity to enhance professional competence, strengthen existing practice, and plan future career development.

Students have previously completed work placements with respected organisations including Birmingham Children’s Trust, Manchester Prime Care, Omega Health Care Solutions, Sanctuary Care, St Catherine’s Care Home, and others.

Assessment

Written Assessment: 350 words reflective essay.

OPT Requirements: B2 

OPT Exemptions

  • UK Level 2 qualifications or above (ESOL and/or shorter courses cannot be accepted)
  • Romanian Baccalaureate B2 or above with all English components
  • GCSE grade 4 or above
  • IELTS 5.5 or above
  • Duolingo 85+
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in English

 

Assessments throughout the course 

This programme has no formal examinations. Assessment methods include:

  • Presentations
  • Written assignments
  • Case study analyses
  • Professional discussions
  • Completion of an e-Portfolio

Independent study is essential. Students are expected to undertake research, homework tasks, and group activities outside scheduled class hours. Lecturers will provide guidance to support effective self-directed learning.

Entry Requirements

Applicants Must be Aged 18+ and:

  • Hold a Level 3 qualification or an Access to Higher Education Diploma
  • Demonstrate English proficiency at GCSE Grade 4/C or CEFR B2 (an on-campus English test is available if required)
  • Successfully complete an academic interview

 

Applicants Aged 21+: 

  • Applications are welcomed from mature students who may not meet the standard entry requirements but can demonstrate commitment to the subject and provide evidence of relevant academic, professional, or vocational experience. English proficiency at GCSE Grade 4/C or CEFR B2 is still required.

 

Important Information

  • An Enhanced DBS check is required prior to enrolment and must be completed before commencing the work placement, as it ensures suitability for working with children, vulnerable adults, and individuals requiring care and support
  • A current CV must be submitted before the start of the course
