Counselling and Psychotherapy

Course Information

Course Overview

The MSc Counselling and Psychotherapy is designed to integrate academic theory with professional practice, offering a combination of classroom-based teaching and a supervised placement within an appropriate therapeutic setting. The programme aligns with UN Sustainability Goal 3, promoting health and well-being for individuals across all ages.

Throughout the course, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of counselling and psychotherapy approaches, therapeutic models, communication skills, cultural competence, and self-reflective practice. You will also learn to assess client needs, plan appropriate interventions, and apply evidence-based techniques across diverse contexts.

Teaching is delivered by experienced academic staff, qualified practitioners, and on-site clinical supervisors who support your professional development.

A variety of teaching methods and assessments are used, including written assignments, case-based tasks, viva presentations, and a final research project focused on an area of interest within the discipline.

Assessment

Assessments throughout the course

Assessment on this programme is designed to give all students the opportunity to demonstrate the full range of knowledge, skills, and competencies required in counselling and psychotherapy. Assessment methods may include essays, reports, case-based tasks, real-life simulations, presentations, projects, and group discussions.

Independent study is an essential component of the programme. You will be expected to complete reading, research, and group work outside of scheduled teaching hours. Academic staff will provide guidance on effective study strategies throughout the course.

Assessment methods are reviewed annually and may be updated in response to student feedback, sector developments, or recommendations from the External Examiner – an independent academic who helps ensure the integrity and quality of assessment standards
